Summer Term Week 10
Monday 29th June
Time Revision
As we approach the end of the school year, it is a good time to revisit topics that we have learnt. Today we are going to look at telling the time. Have a go at the attached work and then look at the online game below.
Maths FrameTelling the time to the nearest 5 minutes
Tuesday 30th June
Today we will look at telling the time to the exact minute. I have attached 2 sheets. One looks at times that are ‘to the hour’ and the other is ‘past the hour’. Choose a challenge from both. There are games to support this on the webpage that I shared yesterday.
This week we will be looking at measurement of length, weight and capacity. Today I would like you to create a mind map of what you already know about measurement. Think about the following things:
What units of measurement are used for measuring different things? e.g. cm for length
What apparatus are you likely to use to measure different things? e.g. a ruler to measure the length of a pencil
How do you convert between one unit of measurement to another? e.g. 1 cm = 10mm
Record everything you know. Feel free to do some further research to check your understanding of measurement. Then, throughout the week, we will consolidate and add to your current learning.
Today we are going to explore capacity. Collect some containers from around your house that are able to hold water (with your parents permission). Can you estimate how many milliliters they might hold? Using a measuring jug, see how close your estimations were. Keep a record of your findings in a table or as a diagram. If you do not have a measuring jug that you can use, compare the capacity of different containers. Which do you think will hold more/less? Are the results what you expected to find out? Take some photos of your capacity exploration!
Thursday 25th June
Using your learning from Tuesday’s lesson, today you are going to try converting units of capacity. Have a go at the first activity on the sheet attached. Convert the units of measurement first on the table provided on p.2.
I would like you to research the different types of triangles there are. Find out their properties and create a poster, leaflet or presentation on what you have found out.
Tuesday 19th May
Today I would like you to find out about quadrilaterals. What are they? What are their properties? Are there different groups of quadrilaterals? Record your findings in a way that suits you.
Wednesday 20th May
Find out what tessellation is if you do not know already. Using your knowledge of 2D shapes, create a pattern that tessellates. You could use the computer to create your pattern or you could draw it on paper. Some shapes are easier to tessellate than others. Do a little bit of research first to help you get started!
Thursday 21st May
The website below has some great interactive games to test your knowledge of shape. Look at the ‘Triangle Sort’, ‘Symmetry Sort’ and ‘Polygon Sort’ to get you started.
Have a go at the task on the webpage below. Look at the cards and decide if they are always true, sometimes true or never true. Give a reason or example to back up your answer.
Today I would like you to really focus on your multiplication and division facts. I have attached a challenge with a mixture of multiplication and division questions. Try to complete it as quickly as you can. See which times tables/division facts you need to practise. Spend the rest of your session practising those specific facts. You could use My Maths or Times Tables Rockstars, or you might know another good website to help practise your skills. The more confident you become with these maths facts, the more they will help you in various areas of the maths curriculum. Let me know how you get on!
Moving on from the work we completed yesterday, here is a task to extend your understanding of factor pairs. Watch the video clips and select a task from the sheet attached to check your understanding.
Multiplying 3 digits by 1 digit using the formal written method of short multiplication. Look at the PowerPoint and then choose a challenge from the sheet attached.
Have a look at the PowerPoint to refresh your memory about ways in which data can be presented. Choose a challenge from the attached sheet to complete.
Now that you have looked at decimals on a number line, can you order the monsters correctly according to their height? Choose a challenge from the attached sheet to order decimal numbers accurately.
I have attached some maths problems below. Pick 5 of the challenge cards and try to solve them. Remember to use your knowledge of the 4 operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Use written strategies or jottings to help you.
Read the PowerPoint on how to calculate the area of a shape. Choose a challenge from the sheets attached. I have attached squared paper in case you may need it for today or for future activities.
When working out the area of a compound shape be careful to split the shape up into smaller rectangles or squares. Then add together the areas that you have calculated. Choose a challenge from the attached sheet.
Following on from the challenge yesterday, have a go at the area and perimeter investigation attached. Pick a challenge and see what patterns you can spot. Remember to count accurately!
