Cultural Capital

What is Cultural Capital?

 

Cultural capital is the accumulation of knowledge, behaviours, and skills that a child can draw upon and which demonstrates their cultural awareness, knowledge and competence; it is one of the key ingredients a child will draw upon to be successful in society, their career and the world of work.

 

Cultural capital promotes social mobility and success.

 

Cultural capital gives a child power. It helps them achieve goals, become successful, and rise up the social ladder without necessarily having wealth or financial capital.

 

Cultural capital is having assets that give children the desire to aspire and achieve social mobility whatever their starting point.

 

We recognise that for children to aspire and be successful academically and in the wider areas of their lives, they need to be given rich and sustained opportunities to develop their cultural capital.

 

The school recognises that there are six key areas of development that are interrelated and cumulatively contribute to the sum of a child’s cultural capital:

 

Personal Development

Social Development, including political and current affairs awareness

Physical Development

Spiritual & Moral Development

Cultural Development  

 

At King's Court we support Personal Development through:

 

  • Citizenship, Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) provision with Jigsaw (scheme of work)
  • The school’s wider pastoral framework; mental health & well-being provision; ELSA, nurture and attachment awareness strategies
  • Growth mindset support – resilience development strategies through My Happy Minds and The Royal Red Crowns of Learning
  • Transition support; into EYFS and into Middle school
  • Work to develop confidence e.g. role play, supporting peers; Children as Leaders
  • Perform drama sessions:  KS1
  • Life cycles:  egg - chick/ducking or caterpillar - butterflies annual life cycles

At King's Court we support Social Development through:

  

  • The School’s Behaviour Policy and Restorative Approach:  Paul Dix
  • Charitable work – for example: Food Bank, Children in Need, Red Nose Day, Macmillan Coffee Morning
  • Raising Awareness: Anti-bullying Awareness, Autism Awareness, Mental Health Week, NSPCC, Black History Month
  • Pupil Voice –through the curriculum, Whole School Forum, Well-being Champions, Children as Leaders:  School Council, Green Team, Librarians, Computer Technicians.
  • Provisions linked to the school’s accreditation of the Attachment Aware Award (Silver 2023-24).  Target this year: Gold Attachment Awareness Award.  We also form part of the Kinship Cluster as a lead school, supporting research
  • Pastoral support from all staff

At King's Court we support Physical Development through:

 

  • The Physical Education Concept Curriculum; TEAM Intent.  (– Together we build positive relationships with PE   E - Educate the whole child  A- Active throughout our lesson  M – Move well and with confidence)
  • Visit from Olympian to school – Beth Tweedle
  • Healthy Eating and catering provision; no chocolate school, water bottles available at all times, healthy lunch menu
  • Safeguarding policies and strategies, including staff-friendly overview
  • The Healthy Me dimension of the PSHE programme (Jigsaw), including strands on healthy eating and nutrition, smoking and alcohol
  • The extra-curricular clubs related to sports and well-being; Pupil Premium funding allocated to support pupil attendance at clubs
  • Activity-based visits in across the school – Windsor Castle, Science Week
  • Design and Technology units related to food preparation and nutrition

At King's Court we support Spiritual and Moral Development through:

 

Spiritual Development 

 

  • The Religious Education Curriculum
  • Open the Book weekly collective worship
  • Our collective acts of reflection
  • Celebration and support for the expression of individual faiths
  • Faith visitors and talks (local vicar assemblies and parent representatives of different faiths)
  • Visits to religious buildings (Parish Church, Methodist church, St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle)
  • Year 4 leaving service at Parish Church
  • Encouraging children to be ‘experts’ of their faith during RE lessons

 

Moral Development

  • My Happy Minds
  • The school’s behaviour policy and Restorative Practice
  • Contributions to local, national and international charitable projects.

 

Developments include;

    •Revising the Pan Berkshire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education 2025

  

At King's Court we support Cultural Development through:

 

  • Citizenship education through PSHE
  • Arts education including Music and Drama
  • Access to the languages and cultures of other countries through the Geography and MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) curriculums
  • Promotion of racial equality and community cohesion through the school’s ethos, informing all policy and practice and specific focus including Black History Month

 

Developments include;

  • Curriculum development draws upon High –quality resources, for example, The Geographical association through Oak Academy
  • Developments in diversity aspects of the curriculum, especially through history
  • Visits to museums: Eton College
  • Visitors to school; Reverend Adel, parent talk, Open the Book
  • Order of the Garter
  • Royal Celebrations

 

Local Cultural Experiences

    •Windsor Castle all classes

    •Selection of Pupils attend Garter Day

    •Royal celebrations including Jubilees, Weddings, Funerals, Coronation

    •Local History:  Windsor Castle, Eton College, Anglo-Saxon links, Magna Carter

  • Local Geography:  fieldwork including traffic survey, mapping skills
