Phonics is taught daily in Reception following the Read Write Inc. programme. Children begin by learning single set 1 sounds such as m, a, s, d, t which are the most common sounds. As children learn new sounds, they are taught how the letters are formed, which helps support their handwriting and early writing skills. Children are taught to recognise, spot and read these sounds. 

As their phonics knowledge grows, they learn to blend sounds into real words and build their fluency through carefully matched reading materials. This clear progression helps to support children in becoming confident, independent readers and establishes strong foundations for future reading and writing success.
