The black dog pulled at the man's sleeve. They turned to see the orange jogger squeeze by the steel wheel-house. "Oh good," she said. "I'm glad you're safe." Then she waved and jogged off. Augustus opened his mouth to disagree. He was not in the canal, but he did not feel safe. Instead, as the man and the dog stood over him, he heard himself agree to take the job. His knees began to shake. Was it the cool breeze that made him freeze? "No," he thought to himself, "it's this man."
