The Abominables

Lesson 1

This half term we will be looking at the Abominables by Eva Ibbotson.  For each of the lessons choose a challenge for you and upload your work to dojo.

Read and enjoy Chapter 1 of the text together. 

Bronze - Look at the vocabulary in the chapter. Find these words and discuss the meaning; natives, ruins, unearthly, mournful, loomed, foul, distraught, fearsome, sacred, studded.

Silver - Can you use the prefix or suffix to help you work out the meaning of some of the words?

Gold - Can you find any other new or exciting words? Discuss meanings of these words.

Padlock - Look up some of the new words you have found in a dictionary.

Lesson 2

After reading Chapter 1 you would have come across a description of the yeti.  Read back through what they say and draw exactly what you think it would look like.  

Bronze - Draw your yeti and label with descriptions from the chapter.

Silver - With your version of the yeti in the middle of your page, find synonyms to describe it.  For example, if you have found the word fearsome, find 3 alternative words instead.

Gold - Change one item of the description so instead of having piercing, blue eyes, it could have raging, yellow ones.

Padlock - Make your own version of the yeti. 

Lesson 3

Read Chapter 2 together.  Discuss any new/interesting vocabulary that you encounter.

Bronze - Use a dictionary/thesaurus to find the meanings and some synonyms. https://www.wordhippo. com/

Silver - Draw a picture of all of the Yetis and name them. What do you think they all might look like?

Gold - Think about size and any characteristics that you can gather from the text, e.g. Yetis have snub noses.

Padlock - Annotate your picture using words from the text to i) describe their appearance and ii) describe their personalities.

Lesson 4

Imagine that you are Agatha.

Bronze - Write a diary entry from the day when she tells the Yetis that they must stay safely hidden.

Silver - Think about: What happened that day? How did Lady Agatha feel and why did she feel like that? What was Lady Agatha concerned about? Tips for writing a diary. - Write in first person (you are Agatha).

Gold - Write events that have happened that day in chronological (time) order.

Padlock - Include how you (Agatha) are feeling about the things that have happened and about what you (Agatha) think might happen if the yetis don’t stay hidden.
